The dredge departed the project, sand filling operations are complete. The project will continue through February placing sand fence, dune grass, dune cross overs and demobilizing the pipe And construction equipment from the beach.
The aerial photos predate this email from Keith Watson of the Army Corps of Engineers.

Work has started in Surf City - visit new Surf City web page for photos!

According to workers at the site, work will continue to early March in Surf City and the Hopper Dredge will leave around the middle of February

According to the DEP, money will be left over that needs to be spent.

The state has released it's bathroom/public access requirements. (bathrooms every 1/2 mile and public access every 1/4 mile!) Please respond with your comments by January 5, 2007 and/or attend public hearings. These proposed state regulations are much more stringent than the current Federal regulations.
(The state's rational behind this is that New Jersey is more densely populated than most seaside states.)

The NJ State Attorney General sued 5 Surf City oceanfront owners! A hearing took place before Judge Grasso on Thursday, November 16, 2006 in Ocean County re: the five Defendants in Surf City.

Surveyors were measuring the beach profile. "The surveyors are out doing condition surveys to assess the condition of the beaches in Surf city Ship Bottom and Harvey Cedars. Though the funding at this time will not afford us to get to HC this time around we want to keep a close tab on the condition of the beaches there so we can get a more accurate idea of what we'll need to do next year there, again if the funding is provided."
As for the recent beach profiles that were recently gathered; they are currently being checked and reviewed and will not be available for some time.
"We are concentrating on Surf City then Ship Bottom at the current time for obvious reasons.
So I cannot comment on how things look in Harvey Cedars based on the surveys at this time , but from visual inspection on my last few trips to the shore, all the beaches are cut back pretty significantly and in a generally worsened condition than I remember form last year at this time..." The number one thing that mitigates damage to property on a barrier island is WIDE BEACHES. This is exactly why the army corps of engineers allocated and designed the beach replenishment program. They are worried about the future fate of Long Beach Island.

The oceanfront owners may no longer have the LUXURY of not signing their easements.

The devastation as the result of hurricane Katrina that happened to New Orleans was predicted. It wasn't a matter of "if" but rather "when". Sadly, the same prediction for Long Beach Island isn't any better since it's a barrier island. In our case "when" is probably going to be "sooner" than "later" because of the climate change which has raised ocean levels and this will continue to happen at an accelerated rate (kind of like the downhill snowball). The polar-regions will melt at an ever increasing speed. Also, the rise in ocean temps spawns bigger storms. The future predictions for barrier islands are dire. Somehow people are complacent and believe that since they've been OK before that they'll be OK in the future. They are certainly not heading the Katrina wakeup call. I like to draw the analogy of playing Russian Roulette, except now there's at least one more bullet in the chamber.

It boggles the mind that the people that would benefit most from this program are the same people that want to prevent it.
